World Soil Day organized under SC Sub-Plan

The ICAR-Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, organized a World Soil Day on 5th December, 2024, under the SC Sub-Plan in Chindanur Village, Chincholi Taluka, Kalaburagi District, Karnataka. The celebration focused on raising awareness about the theme *"Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,"* emphasizing the vital role of soil health in agriculture and the environment, and the importance of responsible soil management for ensuring sustainable farming practices. The event began with an informative session highlighting the significance of soil health, stressing the need for careful measurement, monitoring, and management to optimize agricultural productivity.

Farmers were given awareness about the consequences of soil degradation, including reduced crop yields, and demonstrated how soil conservation practices can address these challenges. Following the session, a live demonstration on soil sampling was conducted at a local farmer’s field. The demonstration offered practical guidance on how to collect soil samples for analysis, enabling farmers to understand the importance of regular monitoring to maintain a balanced nutrient profile and improve crop growth. Soil Health Cards, containing key information about the current nutrient status of the soil, were distributed to the beneficiaries. Additionally, the farmers received guidelines on using biofertilizers, along with explanations of their benefits for enhancing soil fertility, microbial health, and promoting sustainable farming.

A total of 80 farmers and local residents actively engaged in the program, coming together to commemorate World Soil Day. The program was coordinated by Dr. R.V. Adake, Principal Scientist (Farm Machinery & Power), Dr. Savitha Santosh, Scientist (Agricultural Microbiology), Abhishek Jadhav, Young Professional II, and Mailaram Pavan, Young Professional I.
